History of Portraiture

Human beings have always recognized the importance of recording images of people and events. Ancient and archeological sites around the world are evidence of early man's efforts to pictorially capture and describe his surroundings. History has always been meaningful.

Hundreds, even thousands of years later, they help us imagine what life was like, what (and who) was important. In a way, we are able to transcend time and look through their eyes.

As his tools improved, the artwork commemorating mans’ history - and the figures that shaped it - became more elaborate. However, it was only the elite or very rich who could afford to commission artists to painstakingly produce the likenesses and scenes that now grace art galleries, churches, and museums.

Symbolic. Meaningful. Beautiful...

A masterpiece.

At Master’s Touch, portraiture has risen to a new level through Master Photographer Reginald D. Mess. He has combined the old (canvas painting) with the new (artisan photography) and uses his talent to create portraits that are exceptional in all ways. Like the old masters, REG's work mirrors the magnitude of cherished frescoes and tapestries, such as those found in the Cistine Chapel and great halls of Europe.

Clients are constantly amazed by REG’s uncanny ability to select just the right spot for the portrait. Just the right time of day for lighting that is pure magic. Just the right whatever-it-takes to create an image that is symbolic, meaningful and beautiful. But then, as Benjamin Franklin said “The eye of the master will always do more than his hand.” REG MESS is no exception. His portraits tell the story.

Who Buys Portraits

People who love. People who care. People who honor their heritage, family life and/or business achievements. People who believe in the future and wish to leave something behind of themselves that can touch future generations in a very personal and meaningful way.

Imagine how YOU would treasure artwork of your ancestors exactly as they were hundreds of years ago. What could equal the experience of being able to gaze into such a picture and feel as though you could reach into it and touch their hair and breathe the same air...

Commission your family’s masterpiece with Master Photographer Reginald D. Mess at Master’s Touch. It will be cherished for generations. And one day, perhaps hundreds of years from now, someone from your lineage will be deeply grateful you did.

Character Portraits

When REG MESS is commissioned to create a portrait of one individual, he engages his Master’s eye with his keen sensitivity toward the person to be photographed. Who are they to their family and/or community? What are their special interests? What unique things make them who they are? These all form part of the composition to help “tell the story.” The results are works of art as individual as the people he photographs.

Couples

What a lovely way to commemorate togetherness! Couples Portraits created by REG MESS are, in a word, stunning. He carefully takes the time to get to know the couple before determining the location and composition. As always, the finished masterpiece tells a story of the couple. And always, always, always there is something personal to the couple. For example, one couple was photographed on a baseball diamond where they often went to enjoy their favorite sport together. More importantly, it was where they had gotten engaged...

Families

Our families grow up so fast and leave the nest before we know it. With portraiture, we can capture those special times and keep those memories on display forever. Think of a place that is meaningful to your family. Then imagine a beautiful painting of that scene. Now imagine all your loved ones placed in this scene and you have an idea of what it means to have REG create a masterpiece of your family.

Business People

The power of a good business portrait is something REG MESS understands. During the initial consultation, he will determine with you the look and feel that you wish to have created and projected in the final masterpiece. He will work with individuals or with the whole organization to produce character portraits that give viewers a sense of the personality photographed. Directors, board members and CEO’s all agree — REG is a master at creating the personae in each photograph.

Companies

Corporate history, accomplishments, and special events are important to record. REG MESS is available, by appointment, to attend and produce visual images that ‘tell the story’ of the event or the company function. He has flown across the world to capture the essence of a firm’s annual convention, new division opening or major corporate move. These images are often used for office decoration as well as commercial applications for the organization.

Portraiture as Designer Home Decor
The portraits created by Reginald D. Mess are works of art, and thus are a marvelous way to decorate a home or office. The sizes range from 2 feet to 10 feet and resemble paintings (due to the process of stretching photos onto canvas and finishing with an acrylic brush stroke and oil glaze). Below you can see some examples of his portraiture placed in homes.
Here we see a portrait being displayed in the main hallway of the home. Notice how it fits with the decor and is a lovely complement to the painting on the other side of the doorway. portraits hanging in the home

The Process of a Master's Touch Portrait

Banish any ideas you have of stiff, uncomfortable sittings for your portrait. That is not the way with REG MESS! In fact, you will likely find the entire process interesting, relaxing and even fun.

  1. The first step is to call him and let him know you are interested.
  2. The initial consultation will be arranged at your home or office. He will get to know you, your wishes and evaluate options with you. At ease with each other and the objective in mind, the session is then planned in detail.
  3. On the day of the session, REG works hard to capture the perfect image. As he says, “We go as long as it takes.” Once completed, the film is processed and a viewing session is arranged.
  4. Once the selection is made, you have an unlimited choice of sizes that you may purchase. (The most popular sizes range from 30 to 72 inches) The final masterpiece can be created in any shape - oval, rectangle, circular or square. Your precious masterpiece will then be delivered complete with the perfect frame and ready for you to proudly display.
